MicroStrategy launches free standalone desktop data visualization tool, upgraded platform

Seeking to jump ahead of the pack in Strata-born news, last week MicroStrategy announced its upgraded and rebranded MicroStrategy Analytics Platform and it unveiled new freeware too–a standalone desktop tool for self-service data visualization. Essentially MicroStrategy Analytics Desktop allows business users to pull up any data they have access too and turn it into useful visualizations right there on their desktop. You can download the free desktop tool here or grab it on a flash drive at MicroStrategy’s booth at Strata.
“Ultimately we believe everyone should have eyes into data,” Kevin Spurway, senior vice president of marketing at MicroStrategy told me. “It’s a basic right, a basic feature, so we made it available free to everyone. Users have to be connected to the bigger body of data.”
Yes, it’s true; there are similar desktop visualization tools on the market already such as the popular Tableau Desktop but the only thing you get free from Tableau is a short trial period. MicroStrategy’s tool is free forever and always but it’s also a teaser for Microstrategy’s new platform as output from the desktop tool can easily and seamlessly be imported to it. Most other standalone desktop data visualization tools require the headache of integration to make them fit in a full enterprise platform.
But MicroStrategy Analytics Desktop is a true standalone product and there is no obligation to own or buy the mothership.
But if you do, “mutiple vendors are no longer needed now to unify point solutions,” Spurway told me. “We’re solving the conflict between user and IT and enabling companies to start small with data analytics if they want and work their way up to bigger projects.”
The upgraded and newly rebranded MicroStrategy Analytics Platform is comprised of three products: the free desktop tool of course plus MicroStrategy Express–free cloud-based self-service visual analytics–and MicroStrategy Analytics Enterprise–enterprise-grade business intelligence and it is decidedly not free.
“With the addition of Desktop and other product enhancements, we now offer a complete analytics platform for the enterprise as well as for the departmental, self-service user,” said said Paul Zolfaghari, president of MicroStrategy in a statement to the press. “We believe that we have transformed the self-service analytics market with our new on-the-fly data blending technology; free out-of-the-box map analytics for all MicroStrategy customers; our supercharged in-memory analytics to support 10x more data than previously; and extension of our industry-leading performance with improvements in both speed and throughput in big data analytics.”
